Bluesky Social
The time has come to update the site with a new social media account, I have moved from X (Twitter) to Bluesky. Why the move you might wonder? Well like many people I have seen the engagement at Twitter degenerate over the years and since Elon Musk bought the place it has essentially become a complete waste of time to engage with anyone on Twitter.
The final nail in the coffin for me using Twitter was the change in blocking feature. If I block someone I expect them to no be able to see my posts or content. If people I blocked could still see my posts then there simply is no point in being there.
The other main reason to leave is Elon Musk. I think the guy has enough money. More money than he can spend in several lifetimes. No point in my humble content making him even more money. Put it bluntly Elon Musk is an A Hole and I will not help or improve his financial well being in any way shape or form. That is also the reason I will never buy a Tesla, or use Starlink.
The Good About Bluesky
There is a strong sense of community there since I joined. It has helped that I mainly follow municipal and provincial politics on the account and many of the people I enjoyed following on Twitter have also moved over.
I like the ability to filter the feeds and to see what I want to see. I am not a slave to some algorithm pushing alt-right crap into my feed all the time. Call it an echo chamber if you like but I see no need to put up with a bunch of bigots and anti-vaccine nuts. Along with this there is a strong block feature on Bluesky. Blocking a person means they cannot see your posts period.
Starter packs are great to find groups of people that are interested in the same things you are. You can then create your own feeds based on those people and have custom feeds for your interests.
The Not So Good About Bluesky
It is still growing so you might not find all of the organizations you are used to finding on Twitter. For example, as I mentioned I like to follow provincial politics, there are not a lot of provincial politicians on Bluesky yet, but it is getting better. I can understand the slow adoption by those groups. It is hard to update multiple accounts constantly. As Bluesky grows and engagement is better hopefully those groups and people will see a reason to be on Bluesky.
Overall
Bluesky has been a breath of fresh air to take part in. It reminds me of the early days of Twitter. It will be interesting to see how it grows and changes. Feel free to follow me if you like but I tend to mainly post about provincial politics. You have been warned.
